A short press checklist for SutonnyMJ files

Send the encoding they asked for

If the shop said “SutonnyMJ / Bijoy,” they mean ANSI bytes plus that font — not a Unicode file saved with a pretty face. Convert with Unicode to Bijoy and tell them the font name in the email. If they said “Unicode is fine,” do not convert.

Do not send a pirate font pack

Commercial Bijoy packages are not free downloads. The font library only lists files we may share. The fonts guide explains why embedding SutonnyMJ on a website does not fix Facebook.

Check the paste before you bill the hours

Open the file on a PC without SutonnyMJ. If you can still read বাংলা, you sent Unicode. If you see English-looking junk, you sent Bijoy. That is the test the detector automates.

When this advice does not apply

A print-ready PDF that already outlined the Bangla has no encoding for the shop to “fix.” Do not convert the source after the PDF is approved unless they asked for editable text. For phonetic drafting before any of this, use the Avro box.

What to put in the email

Write four lines, not a novel:

1. Encoding: Unicode or Bijoy (SutonnyMJ).
2. Font you expect them to select.
3. Whether the file is the final wording or they may edit.
4. A phone number that answers before deadline.

Attach the converted file and a PDF proof if you have one. Do not attach five “full version Bijoy” zips. The install notes explain why those zips are a problem.

Proofing on the wrong PC

If you only proof on the designer’s machine, you will miss missing-font substitution. Open the same file on a laptop that has never seen SutonnyMJ. Unicode should still read. Bijoy should look like Latin junk. If both look like junk, the file is damaged or mixed — run the detector on a copied paragraph, not on the whole book at once.

Headlines, all-caps and English words

English product names inside a Bangla Bijoy file often survive as real Latin letters. That is fine. Converting those letters “to Bangla” because a tool offered to is how brand names become nonsense. Leave URLs, SKUs and emails alone.

When the shop says the file is “wrong”

Ask whether they mean encoding, spelling, or layout. Encoding is this site. Spelling is the writer. Layout is their job. Sending a second conversion on top of a first one because they said “wrong” is how conjuncts die.

If they need Unicode for a web extra and Bijoy for the broadsheet, keep two exports from one Unicode master. Do not ping-pong the same file through both converters all week.

Fonts we will not host

We will not upload commercial Bijoy installer fonts as “free.” The library is for redistributable files with a licence note on the card. If a card is empty, the font is not ready — use the guide and your licensed copy.

This checklist is for Bangladesh print-adjacent offices in 2026. It is not a typesetting course and it is not a substitute for the operator who will stand at the machine.
